'When you're coming up from behind to catch up, you have to run faster, you have to make more effort.' Mahathir Mohamad

Without the NEP the bumis will regress. That's what Mahathir said. With the NEP for almost 40 years, they are still behind. They have not made good use of the policy. So they must run faster to catch up.

Who would want to run faster when there is no need to run, where money drops onto their laps? This is the irony of the NEP. It is based on the wrong assumption that people would voluntarily want to work hard when they don't have to.

Like it or not, it is a double edged sword. It cuts both ways.

Notable quotes from Sammyboy forum.

We want the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth.

You want the tooth? You can't handle the tooth.

Ouch, the tooth hurts.

It is an inconvenient tooth.

Just a little distractions. Laughing Laughing Laughing

'The Indonesian media is a spontaneous combustion engine that responds to what sells, what's news, what the political parties want to create as news. then you chase the news.' LKY

How different or similar is the Indonesian media to our own media?

Natural for citizens to criticise, as well as praise Govt.

'It is natural that citizens should criticise the Govt. It is also natural that citizens should praise the Govt for doing good. This is how a healthy relation is established between the individual and the collective.' George Yeo

I could have copied the whole article in the Today paper by Nazry Bahrawi. The expression by George, perhaps the most down to earth minister with a halo over his head, shows a different kind of maturity and security in a person. He does not see every criticism as an attack and a need to respond with a sledgehammer. He sees a healthy relationship with the people that may not see eye to eye with the govt in some issues. And he accepts that it is the right of the citizens to criticise if needed be.

'But for a country to work, an active citizenry is crucial.' This is a comment by Nazry in his article.

"Pay them well," said Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, in his address to law students at the inaugural Singapore Legal Forum on Saturday.

"Our young lawyers enjoy a degree of professional and social freedom and mobility which lawyers of my generation have never experienced. Perhaps the solution is in the old fashion but still fashionable way of using carrots without the stick since the latter doesn't work. Pay them well. Greed works most of the time, even for the large majority of people in affluent societies," he said.

Someone would have to foot the bill. Who?

Another incident to confirm our paradise status. How bad is my memory. Only a few years back I heard that many small legal firms were closing down and many lawyers were out of jobs and have returned to work in the corporate world.

Don't say that or you can be sued for libel.

The Chief Justice is an honorable man. His comment on paying them well is a response to market forces. A pragmatic approach to solving a practical problem.

Hi Redblood,

Greed is good. It is the best motivator and a strong driving force for human ingenuity and creativity.

I will recommend that all those lawyers who think they are good enough to be offered a job in Hongkong to take the offer. But they must be prepared to live or operate from there. Then we will see how many will be there.

Often we hear that one person is offered a big salary and it is used to justify for the whole herd from the top dog to the underdog, all get the same top dog salary.

This is a very clever argument.

Quote:
"What about other redeeming intangibles such as honor and sense of duty, dedication, passion and commitment, loyalty and service?"
asked Hussin Mutalib in the Straits Times' online forum recently.

MM Lee replied :

"Those are admirable sentiments," he said. "But we live in a real world."

How I adore the above quote as the living gospel truth.

Quick, raise the lawyers' salary

Another lawyer has disappeared with client's money. Now, when are they going to learn? This is another vindication that the pay them well policy is the solution to prevent such problems.

Quick, quick, increase their salaries....
